The consumption of alcohol during pregnancy can cause serious health problems in the baby and pregnancy
Although the majority of pregnant women choose to abandon the consumption of alcohol andcigarettes during pregnancy, some maintain these harmful habits without notice the numerous consequences of them.
The intake of alcohol can pose a great risk to the health of the baby, besides not being recommended to the mother’s health. Science has yet to determine from that amount the alcohol becomes harmful, so it is better not to risk it. The human placenta is completely permeable to the passage of alcohol, so that the child’s liver, still in training, absorbs much of the alcohol the mother ingests.
The damage suffered by the fetus may be irreversible, for several reasons. In an adult organism the drink already wreaks havoc, to a baby the effect can be catastrophic. In addition, the liver of fetus absorbs the substance twice slower than that of an adult. That means alcohol stays much longer in the body of the baby than on the mother wearing pregnant fashion.
These factors are responsible for numerous complications during gestation period, as occurrences of spontaneous abortion and also the troubling premature birth. According to experts, the risk of miscarriage is almost two times greater in pregnant women that cultivate the habit of drinking alcohol.
But the problems don’t end there. After birth, the child can present various types of physical and neurological changes, many of them irreversible, due to consumption of alcoholic beverages by the mother. The most frequent are mental retardation, facial changes, growth impairment and serious behavior problems. These consequences are larger or smaller according to the stage of pregnancy when alcohol is ingested and with the amount of alcohol ingested.
According to the World Health Organization (who), about 12000 babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (SAF) every year. The number corresponds to 2.2 babies affected for every 1000 babies born alive.
“Fetal Alcohol Syndrome” is the name given to the set of changes in the fetus caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Can lead to, among other things, intrauterine growth delay, neuropsychomotor development and behavioral disorders, as well as hyperactivity, decrease the size of the skull (microcephaly), facial deformities, crooked legs, cardiac changes, greater sensitivity to infections and higher rate of neonatal mortality.
In many cases, the child does not have physical deformities at birth, symptoms of neurological nature later, once the SAF tends to manifest itself until the child complete three or four years of age. That’s why it’s so important to cut alcohol consumption as soon as pregnancy is discovered. This will ensure a pregnancy more peaceful and healthier development for this new life.
